Shrek 2 was the clear box office winner in 2004 and nearly joined the billion dollar club, which is another example of how much Shrek has captured the public imagination over the years.
It is fitting that Shrek 2 is the most successful of the franchise given that it's arguably the best of the bunch. It retains the great voice-acting, catchy soundtrack and general coolness that everyone loved about the first film while also adding a lot of great new elements to the mix.
It's got Puss in Boots, it's got some great villains, it develops the characters further and ups the stakes - in other words, it does exactly what a sequel should do. Although it goes into generic territory at times there's lots to like and, even if it's not as beloved as its predecessor, it succeeds as a touching and entertaining adventure.
