Every James Bond Finale Ranked
24. Die Another Day - Gustav's Plane
Die Another Day's climax is absolutely hideous.
A good film ending should surmise the rest of the film and Die Another Day's ending certainly does that, but in the worst possible way. It compresses virtually all of the film's issues into one terrible sequence.
It's painfully stupid, overloaded with subpar special effects, it features the worst Bond villain of all time (Toby Stephens) - who spends the finale wearing a ridiculous mecha suit - and the entire thing is so excruciatingly OTT and messy that any actual excitement is totally lost.
Thanks to this total absence of suspense and also the lack of some of the wackiness that made other parts of the film (the invisible car, for example) at least interesting to watch, this is ironically a very dull finale as well as a ludicrous one.
Another dire thing about it is that there are flashes of potential here, thus making this all even more frustrating. Miranda Frost's (Rosamund Pike) death is awesome, Graves' plan was quite interesting and the scene where he kills his own father is unexpectedly effective, so this is a sad reminder that, in spite of how hated this movie is, it was actually so easy to fix.
