Every James Bond Finale Ranked
17. Licence To Kill - Tanker Chase
Licence to Kill's ending set-piece, in which Bond and main Bond Girl Pam Bouvier (Carey Lovell) try to destroy four tankers which drug lord Franz Sanchez (Robert Davi) is using to smuggle cocaine, is very solid. It's not an all-timer Bond chase scene and it lacks the edge of many of the franchise's similar set-pieces, but taken on its own terms it's a thrilling and pleasingly grounded climax.
It was also very nice to see a Bond film end with something more small-scale, rather than the huge battles that had ended most of the past few instalments.
It also gives Franz Sanchez, who is among the nastiest and most sadistic Bond villains of them all, a memorably brutal demise - Bond sets him on fire using the lighter Felix Leiter (David Hedison) gave him as a present, thus getting a cathartic revenge on the man who attacked and mutilated his best friend. It's unusually violent for Bond, but given how horrible a character Sanchez was this felt completely earned and satisfying.
