Guy Ritchie was a maddeningly strange choice to direct the new Aladdin, all the more so given how little of his filmmaking personality is allowed to shine through.

This is an identikit blockbuster production which skates considerably on the charm of Will Smith's entertaining take on the Genie - which sensibly doesn't try to imitate Robin Williams - and the eminent appeal of Naomi Scott's Jasmine.

Otherwise it's basically a bland, mechanical re-do rife with runtime-elongating exposition and a thoroughly rubbish take on Jafar (no offense, Marwan Kenzari).

Without Smith's show-stealing work this one would be much tougher to stomach, but as it stands it's simply a film that came out, existed in our collective minds for a minute, and then quickly evaporated.
