Every M. Night Shyamalan Movie Ranked From Worst To Best

1. The Sixth Sense

Unbreakable Bruce Willis
Buena Vista Pictures

The Sixth Sense is the film that made Shyamalan's career, and rightly so. A mesmerising psychological thriller which quickly became a huge word-of-mouth hit upon release, it is a rare film well-noted for its shocking plot twist which is also endlessly rewatchable even once you know it.

Nominated for six Oscars - including Best Picture, and Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for Shyamalan - it is a chilly, thickly atmospheric ghost story that prefaces characters above supernatural tropes.

Bruce Willis, Haley Joel Osment, and Toni Collette give superb performances - the latter two receiving Oscar nominations for their work - but the real surprise here is that Shyamalan followed up his watchable family drama Wide Awake with this all-timer suspense pic.

His handle on tone and ability to get such strong work out of his actors is a testament to his filmmaking chops, and while Shyamalan's spent basically his entire career trying to live up to this early success, it's something that can't ever be taken away from him.

Most jobbing directors go their entire careers trying to make something this excellent, but as was both a blessing and a curse, Shyamalan did it when he was just 28 years of age.
