Every M. Night Shyamalan Plot Twist Ranked From Worst To Best

4. The Visit - They're Not The Children's Grandparents

Unbreakable Ending
Universal Pictures

Plot: In this found-footage comedy-horror, two children go to stay with their grandparents who start acting in a very sinister way.

The twist in The Visit - the 'grandparents' are actually escaped mental patients who murdered the real grandparents - once again shows that less is often more when it comes to plot twists. This isn't a very big twist and many will probably guess a reveal of this nature on the way long before the revelation, but that's fine.

The twist fits the movie's story nicely, allows the bizarre happenings from earlier on to make sense and feels entirely believable, ensuring that the film doesn't jump the shark like many previous Shyamalan joints did. Besides, it still raises the stakes in an effective way.

Sure, it's not the most interesting plot twist ever, but since it avoids ruining the entire film, it's an easy twist to appreciate. It helped to solidify The Visit as a return-to-form for Shyamalan and as one of his better directional efforts.
