Shane Black never wanted Aldrich Killian to be the big villain of Iron Man 3, but thanks to Marvel Studios’ insistent that nobody would buy action figures of Maya Hansen (who he had written as the real baddie), the plan was changed and she ended up being sidelined.

With that in mind, Guy Pearce’s performance as the dweeb turned Tony Stark playboy corporate warmonger is even more impressive. He’s completely detestable and his idea to use entertainment to weaponise his terrorism even more is ingenius when you think about it.

He also fits in with the idea of Tony Stark being accountable for a lot of the s**t that goes wrong in his world and even though some people hate the Mandarin twist, it’s badly underrated and it changed up a formula that was threatening to become dull.
