Every Martin Scorsese Film Ranked Worst To Best
25. The Color Of Money (1986)
Based on the novel of the same name by Walter Tevis, The Color of Money was released as a sequel to 1961's The Hustler. Star Paul Newman was brought back to the fold as Fast Eddie Felson, alongside Tom Cruise's charismatic newcomer Vincent Lauria.
For his role, Newman won his first and only Oscar after decades of bad luck at the Academy, and seeing him trade wits with Cruise makes for some feisty entertainment.
The problem with the film is all down to Scorsese, unfortunately. A director who's always made personal and passionate character studies, here seems to be crafting a movie that doesn't resonate with him.
It lacks the Scorsese spark that characterises his other films, and despite being a solid Saturday night movie, The Color of Money is the only picture in Scorsese's back catalogue that feels like it could have been directed by anybody.
