Every Martin Scorsese Film Ranked Worst To Best
22. Who's That Knocking At My Door? (1967)
Scorsese's first film finds the young director where all up-and-coming filmmakers start out: Trying to find his voice, and figure out what he wants to say. Who's That Knocking At My Door stars Harvey Keitel as J.R, a Catholic man who is dismissive of his girlfriend (Zina Bethune) after he learns her biggest secret.
A lot of Scorsese's more recognisable themes are there, particularly religious guilt, toxic masculinity and lust, and Keitel is remarkable as a man conflicted by his feelings and prejudices. There are some inconsistencies with the flow of the narrative, but all told his first effort is still vintage Scorsese.
It should also be noted that, given the fact that it's a film centred around one man's religious beliefs and a young woman's revelation that she was once raped, Who's That Knocking At My Door has aged very well, allowing Keitel free reign to let out J.R's cruel misconceptions without ever supporting them.
