Every Martin Scorsese Movie Ranked Worst To Best

19. Hugo (2011)

Martin Scorsese Films Ranked
Paramount Pictures

An adaptation of Brian Selznick's bestselling book The Invention of Hugo Cabret, Hugo is Martin Scorsese's touching ode to the magic of cinema, as gorgeously shot as it is heartfelt and touchingly autobiographical.

Telling the tale of a young boy (Asa Butterfield) who becomes embroiled in a bracing mystery involving cinematic trailblazer Georges Méliès (a lovely Ben Kingsley), Hugo is occasionally dizzying in its colourful presentation, but never to a fault; this is Scorsese at his most wholesome and optimistic, and the results are deeply heartfelt.

It tanked at the box office, but Hugo serves a dazzling, moving reminder that for all his technical achievements and grisly tales of violence, Scorsese is a true champion of cinema's power. By the time the credits roll, he'll have made you a believer.
