Every MCU Director's Best Film (NOT In The MCU)

1. Anna Boden And Ryan Fleck - Half Nelson

Captain Marvel grossed over a billion dollars but received a lukewarm reception from critics and fans. It certainly has its moments but too often feels like a basic Phase 1 origin story as opposed to the more innovatIve Phase 3 offerings.

The directing duo behind the film were Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who have collaborated on several underrated gems from the last 15 years.

Sugar and Mississippi Grind are worth a look, although Half Nelson is by far and away their best feature. It is a bit of a cheat this, as officially only Fleck is credited as director with Boden serving as co-writer and producer, but it's simply too good to leave out.

The drama is about the friendship between a drug addicted teacher (an Oscar nominated Ryan Gosling) and one of his students (Shareeka Epps). The film portrays an honest yet engaging view of loneliness, managing to somehow be both optimistic and pessimistic.

Largely overlooked upon its initial release, Half Nelson still holds up today thanks to the outstanding performances of Gosling, Epps and Anthony Mackie.
