Every MCU Director's Best Film (NOT In The MCU)

7. James Gunn - Slither

Chef 2014
Universal Pictures

As mentioned previously, Marvel has a knack for hiring unconventional indie directors to bring some of their more wackier characters to life. James Gunn and Guardians of the Galaxy were a match made in heaven, therefore.

The first film should never have worked and yet it has since gone on to become one of the highest rated comic book movies of all time. Its sequel, Vol. 2, tends to split opinion, but was still a huge commercial hit. Gunn will also direct the third (and possibly final?) Guardians film but not before this year’s The Suicide Squad, which, if its trailer is anything to go by, will be absolutely bonkers.

For now though, his best film comes down to a choice of two. Super certainly has its fans but the correct answer has to be Slither.

A homage/pastiche to the horror/comedies of the 1970s and 1980s, the people of a small town come under attack by an alien parasite. Funny and scary with a charismatic cast of Nathan Fillion, Elizabeth Banks and Yondu himself, Michael Rooker, Slither was box-office failure upon release but has since developed a strong cult following, partly because of Gunn’s popularity.

While a good movie, its grotesque horror is not easy to stomach and therefore it is not everyone’s cup of tea. If you’re into that kind of thing, then Slither is a great watch. If not, then you are advised to stay well away.
