7. Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2

After the first movie landed with an incredible punch of heart and humour, James Gunn had a hell of a task on his hands to try and live up to it (there was little chance he'd ever outdo it). And while it doesn't rank as highly here, he can be very proud of what he made.

Strengths

It's hilarious (probably the funniest movie in the MCU, actually), the action is spectacular and it advances the story of the Guardians without compromising on what made them so appealing in the first place. It's also one of the most emotionally authentic films in the entire MCU, heart-warming, complex and devastating at various times.

And as for the spectacle: James Gunn knows how to put incredible sequences together, let's just say.

Weaknesses

Two of the three villains leave a little to be desired, some of the more goofy effects are a little much and it's extremely annoying that the marketing team decided to spoil so many of the great gags in the trailers.

Also, the story-telling is ever so slightly episodic, rather than feeling wholly organic, but it's not really as fatal as some more cynical reviews would have you believe.
