In another bristling debut from an original Avengers team member, Captain America: The First Avenger follows an eager but unprepared Steve Rogers as he tries to fight in the Second World War, only to be selected for a far greater destiny.

A film all about sacrifice, The First Avenger's biggest achievements lie in the way it paints Rogers as a hero long before he becomes the super soldier Captain America, and the way it manages to be both an effective origin story as well as a gritty war flick.

Epic yet personal, it remains all these years later a near-flawless exploration of what it means to be a hero in times of war, and sets Rogers' up as a man anyone would be willing to follow into battle.
