Every Michael Bay Movie Ranked Worst To Best
2. The Rock
Michael Bay's most infamous film is every bit as silly, over the top and explosive as you'd expected from an action film that stars Nic Cage and Sean Connery and is set on Alcatraz during a hostage situation.
In short, The Rock follows a mild-mannered chemist (Cage) as he joins an ex-con (Connery) who once escaped the notorious prison and attempts to stop a group of former soldiers from launching rockets on San Francisco. What follows is a senseless, over-acted cult classic which works because of its care-free approach to the action genre.
Visually thrilling and completely, wonderfully nonsensical, The Rock's brutal action sequences, comedic beats and breathless pacing make it one of Hollywood's most enjoyable 90s action films.
To top off the madness of the action and the wonderful improbability of the plot, the film features Bay's best-ever ensemble, rounded out by Ed Harris, John C. McGinley, David Morse, Michael Beihn and Tony Todd, all of whom seem to be having a good time playing their characters and causing havoc.
