Every Mission Impossible Villain Ranked From Worst To Best

1. Owen Davian - MI3

The third entry in the Mission Impossible franchise may have been more of a solid rather spectacular entry in the franchise, but it did give us one of the great performances by the late Phillip Seymour Hoffman. His portrayal of the extremely cocky and downright frightening terrorist Owen Davian proves to be one of his finest acting performances and the highlight of what a good but not great entry in the Impossible franchise. If anything, the film doesn't utilise Hoffman enough, his total screen time barely reaching 15 minutes.

Thankfully Hoffman makes every post a winner, his delivery of a speech threatening Ethan Hunt's family members chilling stuff, while a speech in which he notes his enjoyment of killing a US agent also sending shivers down the spine. Hoffman's physical presence is used to great effect in Davian's final fight sequence with Ethan, with the feeling that he is almost toying with his captive so he can truly enjoy the moment. The fact he fully intends on making Ethan watch as he kills his wife is villainy of the highest order.

The manner of Davian's death is slightly lame, struck down by a random car, although this did open the possibility for the character surviving the accident and returning for future entries. Unfortunately Hoffman's death in 2014 ended any possible return to the franchise, but more importantly meant we lost a great acting talent far too soon.
