2. High Fidelity (2000)

Ranking two places above its TV counterpart but living in a different realm all together when it comes to quality is 2000s High Fidelity. The Stephen Frears directed film starring John Cusack as Rob Gordon managed to push aside any fears that Americanising this tale will lose the heart of the book and is a classic for music lovers.

Gordon does very little other than acting like a giant music snob making ‘Top 5’ lists but through this and his failed relationships, the film takes a deep look into male emotion, self pity and forgiveness. It uses comedy and straight to camera monologues to do what Hornby does best and effortlessly make a commentary on the male psyche. Everything may be painted through a mopey man and his love for music but you come to love Rob Gordon and the cast of side characters that interact with his life.

Everything aligned perfectly when High Fidelity was brought together: the casting is excellent, the film is funny, the musicality of it all is brilliant and above all it achieves everything the Nick Hornby set out to when he originally penned the idea.
