The fact that Pixar was able to make audiences fall in love with a largely nonverbal trash compacting robot in WALL-E's mostly wordless first act is one of their finest ever artistic achievements.
If on the surface WALL-E looked like the lazy hybrid of E.T. and Short Circuit's Johnny 5, he's ultimately so, so much more than that.
Brought to life through his endlessly expressive eyes and telling physical mannerisms, WALL-E transcends his robotic form to feel more human than, well, most human characters in even live-action movies.
