Every Pixar Hero Ranked From Worst To Best

13. Joe Gardner (Soul)

Brave Ratatouille Toy Story
Pixar

Soul's Joe Gardner (Jamie Foxx) may seem dead ordinary compared to most of Pixar's heroes, but that's precisely why his existential journey is so crushingly relatable.

Anyone who's ever hustled to climb the ladder in any profession will feel kinship with tirelessly committed jazz pianist Joe, who over the course of his out-of-body adventure comes to appreciate the simpler things in life and the sheer thrill of being alive.

As Pixar's first Black protagonist, expectations were certainly high for Joe, and he more than delivered the goods, learning that a single-minded obsession with any one practise is destructive to the soul, and that there's so much more in life to savour.

If certainly far from the most "exciting" Pixar protagonist for younger audiences, Joe more than compensates with his richly drawn, wholly empathetic character arc.
