7. Planet Of The Apes (2001)
With what should have been the franchise's big return to the silver screen, Tim Burton dropped the ball off a cliff and killed any chance of the series reliving its glory days for another decade.
Burton's Planet of the Apes is the kind of film you have to see to believe. As a director, Burton sure seems like a great choice on paper - quirky and innovative enough to create something truly original - but when it came to actually making the film, everything seemed to fall apart.
With its dull colours, meandering and unoriginal plot and the almost career-ending performance of Mark Wahlberg, the film never settles on a plot thread or finds it own voice. It watches like a two-hour re-tread of its far superior predecessors, and squanders its all-star cast in the process.
Then, of course, there's the infuriating final shot of Ape Lincoln, which...sucks.
There are some high(ish) points, including an entertainingly hammy Tim Roth performance and the decent special and practical effects, but all told Planet of the Apes remains one of the biggest missed opportunities in modern cinema. Still better than Beneath and Battle, mind...
