Every Spider-Man Movie Ranked Worst To Best

3. Captain America: Civil War (2016)

Captain America: Civil War is an absolute triumph of balance: it shouldn't have worked on paper, given the incredible number of moving parts, the weight of fan expectation and the fact that basically everyone was looking to it as Avengers 2.5.

In choosing to move away from the seminal source material and focus on a more personal story - one tied far more to Captain America and Iron Man's pasts than to the general idea of superhero registration - the Russos pulled off an absolute masterstroke.

There were obviously some cuts that needed to be made for balance, with supporting characters relegated to the sidelines or introduced in only cameos (like Spider-Man, actually), but it all worked beautifully.

Even with a very small amount of screen-time, Tom Holland's Spider-Man was a revelation: cocky, vulnerable and immature in exactly the right way. His chemistry with the other team-members was incredibly compelling (and crucially set up exciting future possibilities) and as a testament to how well he went down, the appraisal of him as the greatest Spider-Man ever weren't too far off the mark.
