Though Spider-Man: Homecoming makes a decent fist of being the best Spider-Man movie ever, it was always going to face a huge incline to beat Sam Raimi's magnum opus.

His 2004 sequel isn't just the best Spider-Man movie ever, but it's also the best Marvel movie ever made - and possibly also the best comic book movie of all time. That might sound like hyperbole, but even more than a decade on the film still absolutely stands up as an entertaining spectacle.

Free of the need to do the establishing work of the original, Sam Raimi focused on organic story building, introduced a villain even better than Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin and built on the superheroism as puberty allegory in an incredibly smart way.

Spider-Man 2 does absolutely everything you'd want a sequel to do: it develops Peter's core ideals while introducing new obstacles, it develops already established relationships and it escalated the scale of the threat to New York, Spidey and the world. And it still managed to retain an intimacy that was lost when The Amazing Spider-Man sequel sought to do the same thing. That's really quite incredible.
