Every Star Trek Movie Ranked From Worst To Best

1. Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan

Khan Singh might not have been the best villain from The Original Series, but after the second Star Trek film, it's fair to say that he could be the franchise's best.

Nicholas Meyer's first Star Trek feature draws a lot of its strength from the titular villain, played by a fiery Ricardo Montalban, but its true greatness lies in its atmosphere. The Wrath of Khan is to Star Trek what Empire is to Star Wars, with the sequel adopting a darker tone and an emotional payoff to make it work.

While Kirk and co. had had their darker moments during TOS, the events they deal with in Wrath of Khan are on a whole different level altogether, with the crew having to pay for an error of their own making with the untimely demise of a comrade, namely Spock. While it would be rectified only two years later, the scene where Spock passes away still manages to resonate, with both Nimoy and Shatner turning in gut-wrenching performances as Kirk and Spock come to terms with their fate.

The Wrath of Khan is, for all intents and purposes, completely untouchable. It's dark, atmospheric, and a fine reminder of what made everyone fall in love with the voyages of the Enterprise in the first place.
