Every Stephen King Movie Ranked Worst To Best

2. Carrie (1976)

Stephen King Movies Ranked
United Artists

Carrie, based on King's very first novel, is a film that contains multitudes: On the one hand a brutal horror show that turns into a bloodbath, it's more poignantly a brilliant teen drama, tackling alienation, angst, first love and mental torment with startling empathy.

The film follows Carrie White (Sissy Spacek), an ostracised sixteen-year-old with powerful telekinetic abilities, an almost demonic mother (Piper Laurie), and a date for the high school prom, which turns out to be a cruel prank that quickly backfires.

Behind all of this is Brian De Palma, crafting a tense, contemplative tale that aches with palpable dread. When the finale starts to kick into high gear, you don't know whether to rejoice or shriek in terror, but you will recognise Carrie's pain, and walk away from her revenge forever shaken.
