Every Steven Spielberg Movie Ranked From Worst To Best

24. Amistad (1997)

Releasing several months after The Lost World, Amistad was something of a tonic for Spielberg fans on release, even if it doesn't completely hold up two decades later.

The main issue with this historical drama is that the courtroom aspect is so bloated and unexciting compared to the focal mutiny, that the already considerable 154 minute run-time starts to feel utterly stamina-draining by the mid-way point.

As a result Spielberg doesn't quite land the desired emotion, and it does the movie no favours that there's too much of a focus on the white perspective and shockingly little on black suffering. From a director as switched-on as this, it just feels a bit half-baked, even if it's a story well worth telling.
