Fashioned as something of an apology for 2009's horrendous X-Men Origins: Wolverine, The Wolverine saw director James Mangold serving up a very different Wolverine movie, which while sabotaged by a disappointing third act, is still generally a lot of fun.

Hugh Jackman's performance is typically beyond reproach, while the Japanese setting gives the film a very distinct flavour, and the action sequences generally dazzle.

It almost falls apart with an overload of plot contrivances and CGI in the final stretch, but Jackman's steely work largely holds it together regardless. Post-Logan its PG-13 stylings seem less convincing, but in 2013 it was just the palate-cleanser audiences needed after his previous solo movie.
