And finally, our #1 spot goes to the movie that redefined the superhero movie in a totally different way. The R-rated Logan may be remembered in part for its wanton brutality and foul-mouthed profanity, but James Mangold opting to reimagine the superhero journey by way of the western genre is the movie's true creative masterstroke.

A dark, bleak capper to Wolverine's story and Hugh Jackman's tenure, Logan is a rarest of comic book films, unfolding with a spare, unfussed pace yet nevertheless serving up ultra-gory action and an affecting tale of redemption for one of cinema's most iconic superheroes.

Dafne Keen and Patrick Stewart provide remarkably affecting support as Laura and Charles Xavier respectively, Boyd Holbrook is a suitably charming yet imposing villain, and even the introduction of a Wolverine clone can't derail the movie's gritty tone. And of course, that final shot is just absolutely perfect.
