Tim Burton once again reimagines a classic tale, this time a new adaptation of Roald Dahl's classic children's book Charlie and the Chocolate factory. Unfortunately, while the first film was downright whimsical and fun, this one feels overloaded and unoriginal.

The movie delivers the same story, as Willy Wonka's chocolate factory offers out five golden tickets to lucky children who will get to tour the place.

Some new additions are given to the film that make a lot of sense, such as Mike Teavee's obsession with video games and popular culture, and Violet's competitive personality. Not only do these changes update the characters, but in regards to Violet, it actually gives her an identity outside of just a girl who likes gum.

Unfortunately, despite these good decisions, the film does very little to keep you invested, as although there is some creativity it's nothing we didn't see in the original. Additionally, although the characters have been given a coat of paint, they are only developed on the surface level and lack any genuine depth.

There just seems to be a dark edge missing here that loses the sinister tone which made the original story so wickedly charming.
