The thing most - if not all - people associate with Rain Man is Dustin Hoffman's Oscar-winning turn as Cruise's autistic brother Raymond. And whilst this is fair, the drama's actual backbone is Cruise himself, who plays self-centred salesman Charlie Babbitt with more vulnerability than he's ever offered on-screen.

Charlie's journey from casually cruel workaholic to good-natured, sensitive brother is a character development for the ages, and one that Cruise brings to life with narcissistic intensity and, in time, an endearing heap of sweetness.

The film maybe shouldn't have won Best Picture, but Cruise's work opposite Hoffman makes it a forgivable victory.
