Evil Dead 4: 10 Things It Must Get Right

1. The Remake Is In Canon With The Originals

evil-dead-feat The arena is different than it was before. Ash's story is far from the only one in the Evil Dead universe. The remake will be out soon, and already has a sequel in production. Early reviews are glowing. It takes the series back to its horror roots. It is the sequel fans of the original might've expected when Evil Dead 2 was first announced. It needs to be in canon. Film universes are all the rage now. Marvel did it, DC wants in, and even LucasFilms wants a bunch of Star Wars spin-offs. However, horror films have been doing this for awhile, with some success. Freddy and Jason are in canon with one another ever since the release of Freddy vs Jason, and, until Prometheus, Aliens and Predators occupied the same universe. If you look at the chronology of all these franchises, nothing in them indicates that they can't be in canon with one another. It just makes their horror universes feel more expansive and big. Evil Dead needs this. Keep in mind, when Raimi recently said he was making a new Evil Dead script, he didn't refer to it as Evil Dead 4. He referred to it as "Army of Darkness 2." There is a division between the original story and the remake series. However, unlike most remake series, the remake and original will have sequels released side-by-side. As such, it would be a waste to not have these two universes intersect in some way. Of course, here's the problem: how do you compromise slapstick Army of Darkness 2 with nightmarish remake Evil Dead 2? The trick is that both films would reference the events of one another, making them canon, but neither cast will appear in the other. That way, both films can tell their stories without being forced to compromise to the restraints of the other. You can have horror in one story, but have a giant army of walking bones in the other, and it all works together. Evil Dead 2 can explore the horror of the present with a new cast diving into terror and dread, while Army of Darkness 2 would explore the lore of the universe with an experienced traveler. Who knows? Maybe eventually it can all intersect, but not yet. Give the stories time to develop before it all comes to a head. Evil Dead 7 can just be the Avengers. Make it a party. Oh, and if you're wondering about small continuity issues, don't. Because the creators won't.
