Evil Dead Rise Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs

4. It's Funnier Than The Evil Dead Remake

One of the biggest complaints about the Evil Dead remake is that it was relatively humourless, at least compared to the three prior Bruce Campbell-starring movies.

But Rise decides to basically split the difference between the zanier comedy of the original trilogy and more straight-laced approach favoured by the remake.

Evil Dead Rise certainly isn't a laugh-a-minute affair and doesn't get close to the slapstick of the Raimi/Campbell films, but still offers up wonderfully caustic flecks of deliciously black comedy.

A delightfully unhinged sequence involving an eyeball is sure to leave audiences howling with laughter, and the Deadite Ellie has some horribly sassy one-liners you'll probably feel bad for laughing at - but do it anyway.

This is probably the sort of tone a modern Evil Dead movie should strike - not going overly wild but also making it clear it knows how fundamentally goofy this all is.
