Fact Vs Fiction: Schindler's List
5. FICTION: There Was Only One List
As Schindler had nothing to do with the compiling of the names of Jewish labourers to be moved to Czechoslovakia, it is debatable whether the movie title, Schindler’s List, is suitable. Another fact which brings the movie’s title into question is that there was more than one physical list.
In 2017, a list containing the names of 800 male workers from the German Enamel Factory went up for sale. It was reported to have been written by Schindler’s secretary, Itzhak Stern. The document’s historic significance allowed the seller to receive over $2,000,000 for the sale but was reported to have been one of seven. As Schindler and his accomplices managed to save the lives of over 1,000 people, this appears to be correct.
Four of the alleged seven lists are known to still be in existence, with one being on display in the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC and two more placed in the Yad Vashem, Israel’s official Holocaust memorial.
