Fast & Furious 8: What The Ending Of Fate Of The Furious Really Means

1. They'll Never Replace Brian

There was probably a lot of temptation to use the spectre of Paul Walker in this film a lot more than they did, but mercifully, the film resists - only mentioning him twice (the second time being the symbolic naming of Brian Marcos Toretto).

The only other time they mention him, it's when Letty and the crew discuss bringing Brian back in when Dominic has "gone rogue". She dismisses it out of hand saying Dom would never have allowed it - that they had made a promise not to go to Brian.

In the grand scheme of things, what they're saying there is that there is no situation so extreme that they'd call Brian in. If Dom - his brother - going rogue wasn't going to do it, nothing was. If Furious 7 was a goodbye to the character, this was a line drawn under him, the end of any suggestion that he could be replaced by Walker's brother or another actor. He is officially, symbolically retired.
