Fast & Furious 9 Review: 5 Ups & 5 Downs

5. The Entertainingly Ridiculous Action

Justin Lin is by far the most technically skilled filmmaker to have worked on the Fast Saga, and he proves that once again with his silky smooth camera coverage this time around.

Though the action is considerably more cartoonish than in any of Lin's prior efforts, and it can't quite match the deranged creativity of the series' better movies, it's still breezy fun watching all this vehicular mayhem play out.

By far the best set-pieces involve liberal use of ultra-powerful magnets to fling cars around city streets and even wreck the surrounding environments, but an opening chase across a Central American minefield is pretty damn fun too.

One gets the feeling that Lin was extremely eager to get back in the director's chair, and he certainly delivers the slickly confident thrills audiences expect from him.
