Fifty Shades Freed Review: 3 Ups & 7 Downs
4. The Thriller Elements Are Hilariously Bad
Though Fifty Shades Darker flirted with introducing erotic thriller elements as the sublimely creepy Jack Hyde assaulted Ana and plotted revenge on her and Christian, Freed fully commits to it in the most ludicrously terrible fashion possible.
Jack's poorly thought-out revenge plan feels so wildly at odds with what the franchise is supposed to be about at its core, and more to the point, its quality is only on par with the literally hundreds of naff straight-to-VOD thrillers that hit streaming platforms every year.
It's impossible to take seriously, and in addition to detracting from the film's sex appeal, offers up virtually no suspense or intrigue whatsoever.
