4. Christian Bale
Now, Bale does not quite meet the specifications of the text, in that he is far older now than the characters age - 27 - but creative license has often allowed actors to play characters they are not typically suited to (like Daniel Radcliffe starring as a near middle-ages man in The Woman In Black, for instance) and Bale has a lot of characteristics that would have meant something great to the character. The big appeal here comes squarely from Bale's performance in American Psycho, his break-out role, which was as energetic, insane and sexually charged as any performance has ever been, and the idea of Bale rechannelling Patrick Bateman, and bringing in some of the measured poise of his Bruce Wayne is just irresistible. Bateman and Wayne both have the same sort of demons as Grey, and Bale showed in American Psycho that he is more than comfortable with nude scenes, particularly as he's notorious for his commitment to building up his body to suit roles. Fifty Shades would also have been the perfect opportunity for the chameleon-like Bale to once again reinvent himself after devoting himself to Chris Nolan's Batman trilogy, especially considering his conscious conviction not to be type-cast in the past.
