Fifty Shades Of Grey: 10 Ways It Tricks People Into Liking It

6. The Two Leads Are A Last Resort

Reshoots are incredibly commonplace (i.e. they happen on every big budget movie), but so often the mainstream press will present them as the sign of some intrinsic problem with the film at hand. Fifty Shades Of Grey's late-in-the-day pick-ups, however, caught everyone's attention when insider sources suggested they were pretty extensive due to the lack of chemistry between Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dorman, both in the sex scenes and more conventional relationship moments. And not only were those reports correct, but the reshoots were a failure - at not one point does it feel like there's any attraction, sexual or otherwise, between the central duo. They could have been shot in separate rooms, with the footage cobbled together Lucas-style for all the sparks the two create. It's not all that surprising. Johnson and Dorman aren't here because they believe in the material or were intrigued by the screenplay, but because it was their best hope at breaking the A-List. That's why the already well-known Charlie Hunnam dropped out. Any actor with integrity or some vaguely prolific public status would naturally steer clear of a film of this low pedigree, meaning only the very bottom of the barrel were in contention. And although the film's stars are filling plenty of column inches, making their names seem important, the way they blush their way through the film suggests there won't be much in their future beyond the inevitable sequels.
