Finch Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs
2. Too Many Needle Drops
The first half of Finch in particular gets a little too over-eager with the needle drops of popular songs, to the extent that it feels a bit like a conceited tool to try and nail down a more light-hearted vibe.
It certainly never becomes as obnoxious as, say, the first Suicide Squad movie, though between the bookending use of Don McLean's "American Pie" and the hilariously on-the-nose invocation of Talking Heads' "Road to Nowhere," the musical choices aren't particularly imaginative.
One suspects at least some of the musical selections were added deep in post-production to try and even out the film's tone, but ultimately they do often feel overdone and a little too calculated for their own good.
