his blog Tuesday, in regards to his low-budget Indie 'superhero in the real world' movie
Super...
"Yes, I know, there have been other films that are superficially the same as ours, movies about real people becoming superheroes including some very good ones. But ours is the first that, although funny, focuses first and foremost on the emotions of the characters involved. It is a dark, gritty, violent, no-hold-barred independent film that is, I promise you, not at all what you expect."
Problematic for Super is the timing, coming so soon after the low-budget indie
Defendor and of course this year's
Kick-Ass which both basically had the same plot - but Gunn has managed to get himself an interesting little cast together, who apparently all worked for the lowest fee the acting guild would allow, and he's confident he has something new to bring to the over-saturated genre.
Rainn Wilson stars as Frank, the average, over-weight, Homer Simpson-esque guy who decides to become the superhero Crimson Bolt when his wife (
Liv Tyler) runs off with the smooth-talking drug-dealing
Kevin Bacon. In a Juno reunion with Wilson, -
Ellen Page plays the female comic-book store clerk who becomes his sidekick, with supporting roles for
Nathan Fillion, Michael Rooker and
Linda Cardenelli. Movie is now complete, and is in post-production. Gunn is searching for a distributor so he can release his movie next year and based on his last movie, let's hope he gets it.
