First Real Look: Red Skull In CAPTAIN AMERICA & More Trailer Images...
The Captain America Super Bowl Trailer rocks doesn't it? The ad ends with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) testing out Steve Rogers' (Chris Evans) shield, a nice joke actually, where she proclaims "I think it works" and you know what - she's right, this trailer does work in all the ways it wants to. It feels both light-hearted and pulpy serious - just like the best of the Captain America stories do - and the tone is very reminiscint of Joe Johnston's own hero vs. Nazi's Word War II actioner The Rocketeer, so I suppose this comes as no surprise. I'm also getting a heavy vibe of Iron Man about this trailer... I'm really digging the tone and just how fun this looks. Red Skull (Hugo Weaving) looks like he could be the cousin of Skeletor, a childhood favourite pulp villain of mine - so of course I'm into this. And yes, I was the one who said after the Green Lantern trailer hit that I was done with comic book movies because of how stagnate the genre has felt recently but you know, the Captain America character isn't about pushing the boundaries of what this limitless genre can do. We expect much more from Thor on that front (and indeed Lantern, despite the trailer not showing glimpsing otherwise), Captain America is not designed to be anything more than a feel good, overly patriotic & bad-ass action piece. I do have one noteworthy gripe with the 30 second reveal though. What kind of lame-assed CGI work went into making Chris Evans a sans 100 pounds, nay on anorexic young man? I guess with the Super Bowl deadline looming on the visual effects guys they probably they had to cut corners, so we will give them a break of sorts. But wow... just horrid. Atwell looks cool... Maybe my expectations were really low, I don't know, but I dig this trailer. I really hope Marvel keep the momentum going and show us a much longer reel in the coming weeks. Marvel will release Captain America: The First Avenger on July 22nd (U.S.) and a week later in the U.K.
