Flatliners Review: 3 Ups & 8 Downs

4. The Terrible Pacing

Flatliners James Norton Ellen Page

In fairness, the original 1990 movie was also massively overlong at 114 minutes, but it doesn't feel anywhere near as stamina-drainingly dull as this version, which clocks in at a close 110 minutes.

You will feel almost every minute of that runtime due to the brutal pacing, with numerous pointless scenes (such as the students all getting drunk, taking their clothes off, making out and destroying a wall in Courtney's apartment) grinding things to a halt.

There's a "suspense" sequence on a boat that goes on at least three minutes too long, and numerous other scenes feel over-written and in need of far more judicious editing. There's so much guff in here that a good 10-15 minutes could easily be trimmed off and make it far easier to sit through.
