Game Night Review: 7 Ups & 3 Downs

5. The Mystery Is Genuinely Compelling

The central narrative hook of Game Night is of course a comedic riff on David Fincher's classic 1997 thriller The Game, with neither the characters nor the audience ever being quite sure what exactly is a game and what isn't.

This is exploited exceptionally well throughout the film, keeping the audience on their toes by knowing when to ramp the absurdity up, when to start explaining things, and when to pull back.

No spoilers here, of course, but the ultimate result of the night is terrifically satisfying. Considering this was probably the easiest aspect of the movie to bungle, they totally stuck it throughout and especially nailed the landing.
