After it was revealed that pop star Ed Sheeran was going to be turning up in Season 7, it was widely assumed that he was going to be playing someone interesting, or that he'd at least have the decency to die in a way that would add him to the mythology of the show permanently.

Instead, we got him singing a song from the books with his lovely pipes and eating a rabbit on a stick with Arya. He's quite easily the most mild-mannered soldier in the history of Westeros.

Naturally, his fans went wild at the mere sight of him...

Most importantly, his cameo served a far greater purpose than just dropping in a familiar face for a cheap thrill. Casting such a likeable guy (or at least such a harmless one) made it a lot easier to sell the meaning of the scene - that there are good guys in the Lannister army too, and Arya won't be able to just kill them all with moral impunity...

And it wouldn't be a proper fandom without someone suggesting he has sex with someone or something else immediately...
