Geoff Johns Promises "Hope And Optimism" For DC Superhero Movies

Following the recent shake up of executive roles at Warner Bros., newly appointed executive for DC Films, Geoff Johns, has outlined his plans to bring "hope and optimism" to the studio's future output.

Speaking at a press conference reported at Vulture, Johns discussed his new role and outlined his plans for overseeing upcoming productions including Superman, Batman and The Flash.

Reflecting on the reaction from fans and critics to BVS - and the view of Superman as an angry god who needs to be kept in line - Johns proposed a revised take on the character:

I think people make a mistake when they say, Supermans not relatable because hes so powerful. Im like, Are you kidding me? Hes a farmboy from Kansas who moves to the city and just wants to do the best he can with what hes got. Thats the most relatable character in the world.

While Johns made no explicit mention of Zack Snyder or the controversies surrounding BVS, he did emphasise the need to bring more emotional resonance to the forefront.

Theres a lot of emotional underpinning of the characters and the stories," he said. "It's not that people take it for granted. Theyre just not as aware of it. But when its not there, you really feel that emptiness. Johns has a developed track record of delivering quality storylines which capture the essence of the lighter-hearted side of DC's output. After revitalizing Green Lantern, his Justice League reboot in 2011 marked him as a writer with a reverence for DC's extended mythology.

With Johns adopting a Kevin Feige-like role at DC Films, the cinematic universe could be in for a much-needed shake-up.
