Geostorm Review: 2 Ups & 8 Downs

4. Dean Devlin's Atrocious Direction

Geostorm Daniel Wu
Warner Bros.

Geostorm is the directorial debut of Dean Devlin, who is best known for serving as a producer and writer on the likes of Stargate, both Independence Day movies, the 1998 Godzilla and many more.

It's a pretty odd and unexpected career path for a mega-producer like Devlin, to make his own movie almost two decades after he became a big name in the industry, and as you'd expect, the end result shows that directing just might not be his forte.

Devlin has clearly attempted to ape his pal Roland Emmerich's blockbuster style, but the shot selections feel more rushed and less coherent, and simply it's blindingly obvious that this is a film helmed by someone who didn't really have any business being handed such a huge budget.
