It's not terribly shocking when you consider how nervous Paramount probably are at making the movie play with mainstream audiences, and throwing in a proper origin story has probably quelled their fears a little.

This only furthers the belief among some fans that GITS is basically being mounted with the superhero movie formula in mind.
