Ghostbusters: Afterlife Trailer Review - 7 Ups & 4 Downs

3. The ECTO-1 & Demon Dog Sequences

That ECTO-1 sequence, which sees the "old girl" recovered from a barn, brought back to life and then taken on a joy-ride through a cornfield and then the town (on the tale of a ghost that was presumably accidentally released from the old trap) is the trailer's crowning glory. It's the money shot - the same as the Millennium Falcon in the first trailer for The Force Awakens - a sort of visual homecoming cue and it's pitched perfectly.

After the slow, not-Ghostbusters opening, having the trailer switch at that point was pretty inspired and ECTO-1 was the right choice of focus for that function. Think about it, it could have been Slimer, or Janine, or just a Ghost Trap - all of which would have been easy wins, but not QUITE as iconic as the car.

And on top of that, at one point we get a brief flash of a Demon Dog - clearly one of the same creatures that terrorised the original Ghostbusters back in the 80s - standing on Paul Rudd's car bonnet. That's less overt, but it's a clever little fan-baiting nod that goes a long way.
