Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire Review - 4 Ups & 6 Downs
The Ghostbusters franchise finally runs out of juice.
2024's blockbuster season is now in full swing, and hot off the heels of the brilliant Dune: Part Two, we have the fifth entry into the Ghostbusters franchise - Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,
Now, if many - this critic included - felt that predecessor Ghostbusters: Afterlife positively dripped with nostalgia-baiting cynicism, it at least it had a clear idea of what it wanted to achieve. It wasn't great and perhaps not even good, but it delivered some scattered, fan-pleasing thrills while turning a modest profit at the box office.
The creative returns are considerably diminished for this lackluster follow-up, though, which has unsurprisingly received mostly frosty notices from critics so far.
Indeed, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire isn't an offensively terrible movie, but it is perhaps something worse - it's really quite boring.
Possibly vindicating 2016's divisive reboot in the process, Frozen Empire is the first entry in the franchise to truly feel like it was sent out into the world without a soul - a crass commercial obligation once again coasting on the fanbase's love for the classic original movie.
And so with that in mind, here's everything the new Ghostbusters flick gets wrong...
