Golden Globes 2021 Review: 8 Ups & 6 Downs
4. Jane Fonda's Cecile B. DeMille Award Acceptance Speech
This year's recipient of the prestigious, honorary Cecil B. DeMille Award was none other than the inimitable Jane Fonda, who took to the stage and made the absolute most of her opportunity to address the world.
Fonda, a noted, lifelong activist, spent much of her speech pleading for greater diversity in the film industry, and though not calling out the HFPA directly, it didn't take much reading between the lines to appreciate the sentiment of her words.
Fonda's classy speech concluded with a call for Hollywood to stand up and create a welcoming space for diverse voices, rather than allowing the exclusionary status quo to endure:
"Stories - they really can change people. But there's a story we've been afraid to see and hear about ourselves in this industry. A story about which voices we respect and elevate - and which we tune out. A story about who's offered a seat at the table and who is kept out of the rooms where decisions are made. So let's all of us - including all the groups that decide who gets hired and what gets made and who wins awards - let's all of us make an effort to expand that tent. So that everyone rises and everyone's story has a chance to be seen and heard."
