9. Light Humour
Injecting touches of humour into a film of this suspenseful a caliber is risky. It can go two different ways; the route you dont want is where everything comes across as ham-fisted, cheesy, and unnatural. After all, this is a film about facing impending death in deep space. Fortunately, the filmmakers understood that humour in situations like this is intended to mitigate stress as briefly as possible. Its still a far cry away from being lost in space, but for me personally, what springs to mind is when youre a child getting a needle pricked into your skin or something generally painful at a hospital. Nurses and Doctors will try lightheartedly communicating with you, using jokes or basic humour to take your mind away from whatever horrible experience youre going through, and the charismatic George Clooney occasionally cracking jokes during the movie essentially serves that function.
